Women's basketball is one of the popular active sports, in which actions are aimed at both attack and defense. The goal of the game is to throw the ball into the opponent's basket.

This sport sharpens coordination, keeps the body in good shape, and has a beneficial effect on the heart, and therefore it is included in the school sports program.

History of women's basketball

Women's basketball has appeared at the end of the 19th century and is now widespread throughout the world.

In the world

There is a myth that the first women's match between women's basketball teams took place to the USA in 1892 between secretaries from the Youth Christian Organization and teachers from the elementary school.

More confirmed information suggests that March 22, 1893 The first game in this sport took place between students from different courses at Smith College.

I taught physical education to these girls Senda Branson, which is called the "mother" of women's basketball. She spent the first official game.

Officially, the rules of women's basketball were described and adopted in 1932, at the first congress of the International Basketball Federation.

In 1938 in Rome (Italy) The first European Women's Basketball Championship took place, which was won by the Italian team.

Santiago (Chile) in 1953 was chosen as the site of the first World Championship, where the victory went to American basketball players. And already in 1976 Women's basketball became part of the Olympic program. Games were held in Montreal, In Canada. Girls from the USSR, USA, Brazil and Australia competed for the title of champions. The victory went to the Soviet team.

In Russia

The first game in the international arena for Soviet basketball players took place in 1935 in Paris and was a huge success. The team from the USSR beat the French team of basketball players with a huge difference in points. After this, the Soviet women athletes were offered to compete with the men’s team, where they again won.

In 1937 The first championship among club teams took place in the USSR. And among the women's teams, the victory went to Dynamo Moscow.

In 1950 The first women's basketball team was created in the USSR.

The team was “number one” almost always, losing first place to other countries only twice in its history ( in 1957 at the second World Championships And in 1958 at the sixth European Championship).

In 1976 together with a wonderful trainer Lidia Alekseeva, who in the past was herself one of the most gifted basketball players in the USSR, the team brought Olympic gold to the country. Later, the Soviet team won another gold medal at the Olympic Games in 1980.

Women's basketball rules

Women's basketball has special requirements.

The principle of the game among women

  • Compete two teams of five people in each (more 5-7 players waiting on the bench).
  • The game takes place on a rectangular field whose dimensions are 28 by 15 meters. Sports equipment - basketball.
  • Two rings are installed parallel to the end lines of the court at a height 3.05 meters.
  • The goal of the game is to throw the ball into the opponent's basket and protect yours.
  • You can only touch the ball with your hands, therefore all kicks or kicks are counted as a violation.
  • There are no draws in women's basketball. If at the end of the last half both teams have the same score, then the referee adds time until a winner is determined.

Throws are scored differently:

  • free throw - 1 point;
  • throw from the two-point throw zone (close range) - 2 points;
  • throw from the three-point throw zone (from a long distance) - 3 points;
  • If, after the ball has touched the ring on the last or single free throw, the ball is legally touched by an attacker or defender before it enters the basket, the shot is counted as 2 points;
  • when a player throws the ball into his team's basket, then if it is accidental, the opposing team gets a score 2 points; if it was done intentionally, the throw is considered a violation.

Ring height

The height of the hoop in women's basketball is the same as in men's basketball. The distance from the basketball hoop to the floor is approximately 3.05 meters (or 10 feet).

Number of quarters

Previously, according to the rules of the International Amateur Basketball Federation (FIBA), the match consisted of two halves of 20 minutes.

In 2000 new rules were adopted: the match is divided for four periods.

Duration of a quarter

Each quarter lasts 10 minutes net time (only the time the ball is on the field is taken into account) with two minute breaks between the first and second half, and the third and fourth half. There is a long break between the second and third half. in 15 minutes. Full game time - about forty minutes. In the USA the rules are different: the halves last 12 minutes each.

Important! The half time only counts "clean" time: those minutes when the ball is on the field.

Basketball uniform requirements for women

To play basketball, you need a special uniform that does not hinder the movement of athletes.

Mike

Team jerseys are chosen in the same color(both front and back). They need to be tucked into shorts. For the most comfortable game, the jersey must fit the player perfectly in size.

Underwear under the T-shirt must be the same color.

The number on the jersey should be clearly visible (the size on the chest should be in height at least 10 centimeters, on the back - at least 20 centimeters, width of numbers - not less than 2 centimeters).

The neckline of the jersey should be smaller than what is typically seen on a men's basketball jersey. Also it is more fitted in shape.

Shorts

It is mandatory for all players on a team to have shorts of the same color, but their color should be different from the color of the T-shirts. It is recommended to take shorts one size larger, because this way the elastic band will securely hold the clothes at the waist, without restricting movements when running and jumping.

Reference. It is preferable to choose underwear under a T-shirt and shorts to match the color of the uniform. This way, if some underwear suddenly appears during play, it will be less noticeable.

Sneakers

If earlier you could use any sneakers, now To play, you must wear specialized basketball shoes, since it does not slip on the site, is equipped with protectors and remains lightweight. Sneakers must fit perfectly.

Protection

Protective equipment is optional and is usually worn only for medical reasons (for example, a bandage, knee pads). But there are special rules for her too:

  • you can wear protective equipment for the shoulder, forearm, hip, made of soft material, closed knee pads, a device for protecting the nose made of hard material, glasses, if they do not pose a danger to other players;
  • Protective coverings of fingers, hands, elbows and forearms are prohibited, made of leather, plastic, metal or any hard material.

Attention! In addition to hard equipment, headwear is prohibited (except for a soft forehead bandage wide less than 5 centimeters), jewelry and decorations. Nails are cut short.

Differences between women's basketball and men's basketball

In the 21st century there are practically no differences between women's and men's basketball. The technical difference is only in the size and weight of the ball. Of course, male and female playing techniques differ. True, many girls are increasingly using masculine elements in basketball.

Basketball development

Already the first matches under these rules caused their changes. Although most of them are still in effect today. Fans on the balconies caught flying balls and tried to throw them into the opponent’s basket. Therefore, shields soon appeared, which became protection for the basket. Having studied the rules and mastered the basics of technique, on February 12, 1892, students of Springfield College, in the presence of a hundred spectators, played the first “official” match in the history of basketball, which ended peacefully with a result of 2:2. Its success was so resounding, and word of the new game spread so quickly that soon two Springfield teams began holding exhibition matches, attracting hundreds of spectators to their performances. Their initiative was picked up by students from other colleges, and the very next year the entire American northeast was gripped by basketball fever. Already in 1893, iron rings with mesh appeared. The new game turned out to be so interesting and dynamic that in 1894 the first official rules were published in the USA. At the same time, basketball from the USA penetrates first to the East - to Japan, China, the Philippines, and then to Europe and South America. In 1895, free throws were introduced from a distance of 5 m 25 cm. Dribbling the ball in all its variants was legalized in 1896; since 1897, the team was limited to five players.

The spontaneous formation of amateur teams and leagues led to the fact that students sought to play exclusively basketball, preferring it not only to such traditional sports as American football and baseball, but also to gymnastics, beloved by college trustees. Officials of the Youth Christian Association, heeding the complaints of opponents of the new trend, did not turn a blind eye to such a blatant violation of the foundations of the educational process and practically slammed the doors of student sports halls. However, their desire to ban a new sport that was rapidly gaining popularity was like trying to manually stop a speeding train.

However, if you wish, you can find a positive side to these prohibitions, since it was they that provoked the holding of the first professional basketball match, that is, a match for money. This happened in 1896, when a team from Trenton, New Jersey, in order to pay the rent of the hall, was forced to sell tickets for its game. Having paid at the end of the meeting with the owners of the premises, the Trentor team discovered that they still had part of the money received from the tickets, which was equally divided between the players, making each of them $15 richer.

10 years later, at the Olympic Games in St. Louis (USA), the Americans organized an exhibition tournament between teams from several cities. The same demonstration tournaments were held at the 1924 (Paris) and 1928 (Amsterdam) Olympics.

The American Basketball League was created in 1925, and the National Basketball League in 1937. One of the most famous teams of the 1930s, the New York Renaissance, which had black players, had 2,318 wins and 381 losses over 22 seasons. In 1961, the American Basketball League (8 teams) was created, and in 1967, the American Basketball Association (11 teams). After their unification in 1976, the National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded.

The birthplace of domestic basketball is St. Petersburg. This fact is well known and leaves no doubt. The first mention of this game in our country belongs to the famous Russian propagandist of physical culture and sports, St. Petersburg resident Georgy Dupperon, and it dates back to 1901. Back in September 1900, the Committee for Promoting the Moral and Mental Development of Young People was created in St. Petersburg. And already in 1904, physical education appeared in the committee’s program, which, along with moral and mental development, added physical society. The society was given the name "Mayak". In the report for the year 1907 of his activities (from 09/22/1906 to 09/22/1907) there was a mention of the invitation to Russia of the American specialist E. Moraller, who told the Mayakovites about a completely new overseas game. It turned out that the best Mayak athletes were first introduced to basketball. At the end of 1906, the first basketball matches were held in the Society. The winner of the first competitions was invariably the “lilac” team (based on the color of the T-shirts), led by one of the best gymnasts in society, S. Vasiliev, who was later called the “grandfather of Russian basketball.”

Already in 1909, an event took place that became a definite milestone in the history of not only domestic, but also world basketball. A group of members of the American Christian Association came to St. Petersburg. A basketball team was made up of them, which, to the general joy of St. Petersburg residents, lost to the local “purple” team with a score of 19:28. This meeting took place in the new hall of the Mayak society in house No. 35 on Nadezhdenskaya Street (in Soviet times - Mayakovsky Street). It was this historical meeting that was named the first international basketball match in the book “World Basketball,” published in Munich in 1972 for the 40th anniversary of the FIBA basketball federation. Thus, it turns out that Russia became the venue for the first international basketball match on the planet. Thanks to the efforts of the Mayakovites, basketball soon began to spread in other sports societies and educational institutions of the city, and after the revolution it confidently marched across the country and already in 1920 it was included in the school curriculum of Universal Education along with football as a compulsory discipline. In 21, the country's first basketball league was created in St. Petersburg, with F. Jurgenson becoming its chairman. And it was this organization that was the prototype of the current federation, and it was under its auspices that in the same year the city basketball championship was held for the first time.

In the 1920s, national basketball federations began to be actively created, and the first international meetings were held. So in 1919, a basketball tournament took place between the army teams of the USA, Italy and France. In 1923, the first international women's tournament was held in France. Teams from three countries took part in it: England, Italy, and the USA. The game is gaining increasing popularity and recognition in the world, and in 1932 the International Federation of Basketball Associations was created in Geneva. Its first composition included 8 countries - Argentina, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Czechoslovakia. In 1935, the International Olympic Committee decided to recognize basketball as an Olympic sport. In 1936 he appears in the program of the Olympic Games in Berlin. The guest of honor at the games was D. Naismith. Teams from 21 countries took part in the basketball tournament. The matches were held on outdoor tennis courts, and all subsequent Olympic tournaments were held indoors. The US team became the first Olympic champion. The Americans became Olympic champions 11 more times (in 1980, in the absence of the US team, the Yugoslav team won Olympic gold). In Sydney (2000), the American Dream Team was again first. The USSR national team became Olympic champions twice - in 1972 and 1988.

During the Olympics in Berlin (1936), the first FIBA congress was held, where the existing uniform international rules of the game were reviewed and adopted. In 1948, 50 countries were already members of FIBA. With the development of world basketball, the technology and tactics of the game developed and enriched.

In the first half of the 1950s, basketball began to lose its inherent competitive edge. It was necessary to make a number of changes and additions to the rules to revive it. The most important of these additions were:

Introduction of the 30-second rule (the team in possession of the ball must throw the ball into the basket within this time);

Expanding the area of the zone in which offensive players were not allowed to remain for more than three seconds.

The decision to hold the men's world championships was made at the FIBA Congress during the 1948 Olympics in London. The first World Basketball Championship took place in 1950 in Buenos Aires (Argentina). 10 teams took part in the championship. The first world champion was the Argentine team, defeating the 1948 Olympic champion USA. Subsequently, the US team became world champion four times (1954, 1986, 1994, 1998); USSR national team - three times (1967, 1974 and 1982); Yugoslavia team also three times (1970, 1978 and 1990). The Brazilian team became the world champion twice (1959 and 1963).

At the FIBA Congress in Helsinki in 1952 (during the Olympic Games), it was decided to hold the Women's World Championships. The first championship took place in 1953 in Santiago (Chile), and the first champions were American basketball players. The US team won the title of world champions 5 more times (1957, 1979, 1986, 1990, 1999). The USSR national team held the honorary title the same number of times (1959, 1964, 1967, 1971, 1975 and 1983).

Women's basketball made its Olympic debut in 1976 in Montreal. Six teams participated in the tournament. The first Olympic champions were the basketball players of the USSR national team, who became champions twice more, and American basketball players won gold medals four times (1984, 1988, 1996, 2000).

The first European Women's Championship was held in Rome in 1938, which was won by Italian basketball players. The USSR national team became the European champion 21 times (1950-1956, 1960-1991).

The best players in the history of professional basketball: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Wilton Chamberlain. Modern stars - the unfading Michael Jordan (left the court in 1998), Shaquille O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, Grant Hill, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, David Robinson, Charles Barkley, John Stockton. Among the first domestic basketball players to debut in the NBA in the early 1990s were Alexander Volkov (Atlanta Hawks) and Lithuanian basketball stars Sarunas Marciulionis (Golden State) and Arvydas Sabonis (Portland Blazers).

The strongest men's clubs in Europe are: Greek teams - Olympiacos (Piraeus) and Panathinaikos (Athens), Spanish teams - Real Madrid (Madrid) and Barcelona, Russian team CSKA (Moscow), Israeli Maccabi ( Tel Aviv), Italian - "Timsystem" and "Kinder", Turkish - "Efes Pilsen" and "Ulker".

James Naismith created the game of all peoples of the world, a game of speed, dexterity and ingenuity. Basketball, like a spider, has united the entire planet with one web, and this web has not yet been torn, because it is strong. As strong as friendship.

Currently, basketball is very popular due to its entertainment and unpredictability; it is played both at the Olympics and in courtyards all over the world.

basketball sport tactical training

Women's basketball made its Olympic debut in 1976 in Montreal. Six teams participated in the tournament. The first Olympic champions were the basketball players of the USSR national team, who became champions twice more, and American basketball players won gold medals four times (1984, 1988, 1996, 2000). The international debut of Soviet basketball players took place in 1935. One of our club teams beat the French in Paris with a crushing score of 60:11. The shocked organizers of the match invited our basketball players to play with the men's team. This game also ended in victory for the guests, with a difference of 6 points.

The women's team, created in 1950, had no equal for a long time. Only at the second World Championship (1957) and the sixth European Championship (1958) were Soviet basketball players second. They invariably won all other tournaments: world championships 5 times and European championships 20 times. And in 1976, the women's team under the leadership of Lidia Alekseeva (formerly one of the strongest basketball players in the USSR, who led the national team as a coach for 25 years) became the first team in history to win the Olympic tournament.

The first women's basketball tournament at the Olympic Games took place in 1976. The champions of the Olympic Games were: 1976 - USSR, 1980 - USSR, 1984 - USA, 1988 - USA, 1992 - united team of independent states, 1996 - USA.

Basketball at the present stage

Modern basketball is in a stage of rapid creative upsurge, aimed at intensifying actions, both in attack and defense.

Basketball is widely used as a means of physical education for school-age children and youth. Systematic training in sports games contributes to the comprehensive development of schoolchildren, especially having a positive effect on the development of such physical skills as speed, speed and strength endurance, and agility. Sports games contribute to the development of moral and volitional qualities: courage, perseverance, discipline, and the ability to overcome difficulties. Games also contribute to moral education. Respect for an opponent, honesty in wrestling, the desire to improve - all these qualities can be successfully formed under the influence of sports games.

Modern basketball is an athletic game and the demands placed on basketball players are the highest. To achieve high technical and tactical mastery, an athlete, first of all, needs a high level of development of physical qualities.

A basketball player today is an agile, well-coordinated athlete who thinks quickly on the court.

Women's basketball is a team sport, its main goal is to throw the ball into the opposing team's basket. Victory goes to those who earned the most points during the competition. Only tall and fast girls are selected for basketball. It is believed that this sport is very useful, so it is included in the sports training program for schools.

Women's basketball - rules of the game

Experts believe that women's basketball:

  • sharpens coordination;
  • trains muscles and breathing;
  • improves blood circulation;
  • strengthens the nerves.

These characteristics made the game very famous; the first rules were invented by the American James Naismith in 1891. The teacher wanted to make gymnastics lessons more interesting; at first, the teams simply threw balls into fruit baskets. Only a year later, James formulated the basic rules; at first there were 13 of them. And the rules of women's basketball at the international level were adopted only in 1932, at the first congress of the International Basketball Federation. The most extreme adjustments were made in 2004. The rules are simple:

  1. Two groups compete, with five participants from each.
  2. The goal of the game is to throw the ball into someone else's basket and prevent it from being thrown into yours.
  3. The game is played with hands only; kicking or stopping the ball is considered a violation.
  4. If the number of points is the same, the judge adds time and does so until the winner is determined.
  5. A close-range shot is awarded 2 points, a long-range shot is awarded 3 points, and a free throw is awarded 1 point.

Women's Basketball - Hoop Height

Women's volleyball has become so popular due to the fact that it is the least traumatic. It also improves health with a variety of activities:

  • walking and running;
  • stops, turns, throws;
  • jumping, catching and dribbling the ball.

The height of the basketball hoop from the floor is 10 feet or 3.05 meters. Men's basketball has the same standards. According to sports standards, the basket is fixed at a distance of 0.15 meters from the low edge of the basketball backboard, and the basket itself is covered with a net that has no bottom on the hoop. The bottom edge of the basket is fixed at a distance of 3 meters 5 centimeters from the floor; this rule is common for both men's and women's teams. There are a few more important nuances:

  1. The structure is placed so that it is impossible to move it, and the loads do not affect the position of the shield.
  2. The correct distance from the floor to the top is measured by a specialist, because not only accuracy plays a role, but also the difference in slopes in one direction and the other.

How many quarters are there in women's basketball?

In basketball, “clean” time is counted; the game lasts from 2 to 4 periods or quarters, 12 minutes each. Breaks are given for two minutes. In many sports competitions, time is divided into halves; women's basketball has the same rules. The stopwatch starts only when the ball is in play, but if it flies out of the field, the timer is stopped. The total playing time is from 40 to 48 minutes, everything is decided by the rules.

How long is a quarter in women's basketball?

How long is a quarter in basketball? For each, 10 minutes of non-playing time are allotted, taking into account breaks of 120 seconds between them. Only at the height of the game, between the second and third periods, 15 minutes are allocated for rest. But there are some deviations:

  1. In Europe, a quarter is 10 minutes long.
  2. In America they play for 12 minutes.
  3. In the NBA, the count is 12 minutes, but with timeouts and delays it runs up to about half an hour.

Rating of women's basketball teams

Women's basketball is a sport where the matches are no less exciting than those of men; the referee takes into account points and fines according to generally accepted world rules. To gain the right to play in the most prestigious tournament, the Russian team this year played 6 matches with basketball players from Greece, Bulgaria and Switzerland. The women's basketball team managed to win the World Cup and European Cup, topping the world rankings and displacing the previous champions from Hungary.

Women's Basketball - Movies

The largest number of basketball supporters live in America, where almost everyone in the country is familiar with this game. Thanks to such popularity, directors often made films about women's basketball, and they are successful even at the global box office. The most famous films:

  1. "Away match". The story of a coach who formed a team of black players and led them to championships.
  2. "Season of victories." A formerly famous coach gets a chance to return to his favorite sport, but on one condition: the women’s team must be prepared in such a way that the girls reach the highest level.
  3. "Mighty Max." The story of women's team coach Katie Nash, who manages to turn weak outsiders into tournament winners in a short time.

Women's basketball - Wikipedia Reprint // WIKI 2

Women's basketball is one of the popular women's sports.

Women's basketball first entered the Olympic program at the XXI Olympic Games in 1976 in Montreal, 40 years after men's basketball. The USSR team won then.

Story

It is believed that the first women's basketball game was played in the United States in early 1892. The match pitted secretaries from the Springfield YMCA gym against teachers from Northampton Buckingham Elementary School.

The "Mother" of women's basketball is Senda Berenson, who worked as a physical education teacher at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She taught classes in a newly built gym called Alumnae Gymnasium. She held the first official women's basketball game - on March 22, 1893, 2nd year students of Smith College competed with 1st year students, the match was also held at Alumnae Gymnasium.

By country

Women's basketball is a team sport, its main goal is to throw the ball into the opposing team's basket. Victory goes to those who earned the most points during the competition. Only tall and fast girls are selected for basketball. It is believed that this sport is very useful, so it is included in the sports training program for schools.

Women's basketball - rules of the game

Experts believe that women's basketball:

  • sharpens coordination;
  • trains muscles and breathing;
  • improves blood circulation;

  • walking and running;
  • stops, turns, throws;

  2. "Season of Victory". A formerly famous coach gets a chance to return to his favorite sport, but on one condition: the women’s team must be prepared in such a way that the girls reach the highest level.
  3. "Mighty Max". The story of women's team coach Katie Nash, who manages to turn weak outsiders into tournament winners in a short time.
