Alexandra Gerasimenya: Never give up

Alexandra Gerasimenya is one of the best Belarusian athletes. The swimmer's plans are to conquer the 2012 Olympics in London. However, at 24 years old, Sasha understands that an athlete's career is short-lived. She told the site what kind of education she wanted to get, how she saw her husband and her home.

We are sitting in her new apartment - where for now there are only walls, a bed and a refrigerator. From the double-glazed windows that the builders did not complete, the cold February air reaches us without any visible effort. “Of course, it’s a mess, but on the other hand it’s always fresh,” Alexandra smiles, without losing her sense of humor in any situation. She accepts all changes in her life exclusively in a positive way. And like every exemplary housewife, she already knows what curtains she will hang in her room, and what color the sofa will be in the living room.

However, her current apartment is just a training session - before building a house in which she would like to live her whole life, surrounded by a loving husband and children. And Sasha will definitely have a house, perhaps as a reward for winning the 2012 Olympics in London, for which she is already preparing with tension today.

Achieve everything in 10 - 15 years

- It seems that the fate of Alexandra Gerasimenya was predetermined in advance, because her father was once a member of the USSR national track and field athletics team...

Dad really taught me about physical education. From the age of four, I did exercises every day and ran cross-country races with him. For which, by the way, I am still grateful to him. And I got into swimming thanks to a friend - I went to sign up with him for company in the section, and stayed there. In general, as a child, I was mainly friends with boys, because girls at that age are kind of envious and like to do all sorts of nasty things. For some reason they didn’t understand that climbing trees and playing football was really cool.

- In my opinion, this is a good motor alternative to dolls and a sandbox...

I would recommend everyone to play sports from childhood - in particular swimming. A young man, and especially a girl, needs good posture and a beautiful build. Sometimes you see young ladies who just have ugly, fat bodies, and you’re simply amazed at how people don’t love themselves. Or the other extreme - complete atrophy of muscles, covered by the fact that, supposedly, the main thing in a person is the brain. I adhere to Chekhov - everything in a person should be beautiful :)

- Big sport does not improve a person’s health at all.

Any type of activity of a person in which he wants to achieve super-results, applying super-effort to this, will not benefit the body in any way. A journalist who gets materials for his work during the day and then spoils his eyesight at the computer at night is probably not the healthiest person either. It’s just that athletes are always in sight and, moreover, live a more compressed life - we need to do everything in 10-15 years of a sports career. So we're in a hurry...

Go to training - with positive thoughts

- What is the most difficult thing in your work?

The work itself. It is monotonous and heavy. The first training starts at 8 am. Cold nasty water in the pool. The second workout, which also needs to be plowed - but after a busy day spent in study, business and troubles.

- Happiness is not enough. Especially considering the fact that the water is also chlorinated...

Yes, we’ve gotten used to it after so many years... But on the other hand, can you imagine how nice it is to plunge into the pool on a hot summer day? So everything balances out. In fact, water creates a mood - if it is good, then you will swim quickly. The bad thing is that you suffer so much that you wouldn’t wish it on your enemy... Therefore, I try to come to training with positive thoughts.

“In the finals I achieved a new world achievement, but it was too late - my rivals swam even faster. Much rested on swimsuits, of which some had many, others had one at a time. Therefore, we had to take care, take risks in the intermediate stages and go out in old equipment. The fact is that polyurethane suits are suitable for no more than three starts.”

- Belarus, unfortunately, is not the strongest swimming power in Europe - is there any temptation to move to a place where the ceiling of your capabilities will initially be much higher?

Firstly, I feel that I have not yet reached my ceiling - my results continue to improve. Secondly, you can go to study in the USA or Australia and swim there in a large herd under the guidance of university coaches, but this is not my path. I like to work individually and intelligently, under the guidance of good coaches. Believe me, when I feel that my results have stagnated, then perhaps I will have enough will to change everything and go to train in another country with a foreign specialist.

Do not offer your hand and heart to firefighters

- Isn’t it to France? They say that the guys there are very fond of marrying our leading swimmers, and they then change their Belarusian citizenship. By the way, the press also wrote about your novel. It seems with some French fireman...

It happened. Only this material was dated April 1 and greatly amused the sports community. The journalist drew a parallel with the brides who left, and this was enough to alarm the entire Ministry of Sports. I just laughed when I read this article. I was a little offended by the author just because of one point. I wanted my potential groom to be some blue-blooded crown prince :). Otherwise, a fireman is a small bird; we have a dime a dozen of our own here...

- Is the lack of a sense of humor a weakness of domestic officials?

This is the weak side of any man. At least for me. There is nothing more boring than a young man who evaluates everything with a serious look and does not know how to joke, especially at himself.

After all, if you look at it this way, then life is a game, the rules of which are set by a coach unknown to us. Only he decides when to put you on the field, when to replace you... Is it possible to treat the fact of your existence on earth without irony?

And I categorically do not accept such a quality as rudeness in men. As a rule, they hide their complexes behind rudeness and swagger. I have them too, but it would never occur to me to test another person’s nervous system because of this. Fight them within yourself, get rid of them, but for others you must be a broad and welcoming person. In any case, I flatter myself with the hope that this is exactly what I am to those around me.

- Alexandra Gerasimenya today is a tasty morsel for all kinds of gigolos, who at all times have subtly sensed the capabilities of successful beautiful athletes...

Well, I’ll somehow be able to figure this out. Although... In life you never have to renounce anything. In general, I don’t really understand what patterns human destinies are built on and why everyone is rewarded differently. But this is again a question for the head coach :)

In 2012 - only “gold”!

- You can go to a fortune teller and test your future...

Maybe someday I'll go. Not even to find out what awaits me, but only to destroy the predicted circumstances if they seem disappointing to me. It’s stupid to listen to your verdict and then suffer all your life, thinking that nothing can be changed. Man was born to fight, and should not give up under any circumstances!

- That is, if they tell you “bronze” at the 2012 Olympics, which in itself is an extraordinary phenomenon for Belarusian swimming, then...

Only “gold”! I once had a dream that I... But no, I won’t tell you, although my dreams usually come true. In my opinion, there is no point in working all your adult life, denying yourself many things and not striving to become the best.

- Aren’t you upset by the fact that many Olympic champions, after finishing their sports career, as a rule, are not fulfilled in their post-sports life?

I'm not going to be famous forever. I am quite happy with the laurels of a man who glorified his country on waterways. And then... I am getting a second education - economics and, perhaps, after sports I will choose a fundamentally different path. Life is not in vain if you turn out to be the right people

- How much do you earn now?

The amount depends on the number of competitions won, but on average it is somewhere around 7-8 million Belarusian rubles per month.

Athletes are people too: they think about quitting sports and answer their mother’s questions: “When will you get married?” “Goldfish” Alexandra Gerasimenya spoke about the difficulties in her sports and personal life, as well as overcoming them, for the joint project “Hero of Our Time” between Hennessy Very Special and Bolshoi magazine.

- How do you feel about being called a “goldfish”?

I'm calm. Moreover, this nickname is already more than ten years old. I once won three gold medals at the European Youth Championships, and one of the journalists nicknamed me “goldfish.” It's been the same since then.

- What was the most difficult moment in your sports career?

It would be wrong to single out one point. At each stage, new obstacles appeared that had to be dealt with. When I first started swimming, I was one of the laggards. And I even decided that swimming was not for me, I had to stop. I didn’t leave only because of the team: the guys I studied with and the coaches. She turned from a laggard into a leader and maintained her leadership in the future. The next difficult moment came when I was disqualified for two years. You understand that when you train just for the sake of training, it somehow doesn’t work out very well. It's very difficult to study when you don't have a goal. But she wasn’t there because I couldn’t compete. Initially, it was a question of disqualification for four years. It was difficult psychologically, plus there were also health problems.

- During your disqualification, did you have any thoughts of quitting swimming and doing something else?

Of course, more than once. But, again, you understand that you have just started your swimming career and you can’t stop right away... There was a desire to prove that I can achieve results. Despite the fact that someone doesn't want it. Oddly enough, negative motivation - when you prove yourself, get angry - is much stronger than just the desire to fulfill the category standard or win first place.

You talked about how you could end your career after the World Championships in Kazan. What event or thought made you want to continue?

Probably anger at the situation and the understanding that I want and, most importantly, can achieve Olympic gold. Moreover, there were six months left before the Olympics in Rio, and I would never have forgiven myself if I had not tried.

- Maybe you have some kind of personal attitude? What you tell yourself when you feel bad.

I will say this: one thing never works. If you managed to persuade yourself once, it is not a fact that you will succeed again. We must constantly look for new ways and methods, and come up with inspiring ideas. Sometimes I scolded myself. Sometimes she persuaded. Such elementary, ridiculous, absolutely simple things that should not have yielded results - but they did. Although a psychologist works with us, so in this regard it is much easier for athletes.

Never stop, never give up. Difficulties build character and make you better.

- You are an example of a strong, successful girl who is moving towards her goal. Who do you look up to?

I am a person who does not create an idol for myself. I have never tried to imitate anyone. But I try to see in others the qualities that I myself would like to acquire. There are many such people. When I accidentally cross paths and work with them, I am always amazed. It’s not without reason that they say that we meet people for a reason. Life gives us the opportunity to learn something from them. I think this is true. Even a person who did not treat you very well is also needed for something in life. Difficulties build character and make you better.

- What character traits would you like to develop in yourself?

I understand that I am not perfect: I have many positive and negative traits. I would like to cultivate patience and self-control. It would seem that at my level in swimming an athlete must have such qualities. I agree, but again, professionally you can feel calm, but in life you can approach everyday issues completely differently.

I have a question that is relevant for a beautiful young woman who devotes almost all her time to her career: sports or business. What about the family?

Important question. I wouldn't say that combining family and career is a problem. But I think it is very important that your companion supports your endeavors. We have a stereotype: a woman must clean, do laundry, cook, go to the store, and raise a child. But when dad also gets involved, both parents will be able to do everything in the family and in their careers. The main thing is to act as one team. Many women find themselves in motherhood. I don't think this is good or bad. This is their desire. Then the woman raises the children, looks after the house - and feels great. But there are those who see themselves not only in motherhood, who need personal growth and fulfillment in their profession. Everyone has their own needs, right? A person, be it a man or a woman, feels uncomfortable if the birth of a child cancels out the dreams and plans that he had. It shouldn't be like this, it's wrong. You need to find a balance between career and family.

Are your relatives trying to influence you? Are they not talking about how it’s time to quit sports and focus on motherhood?

I am a person who is difficult to influence. Everything has its time. I don't give up motherhood. Of course, I understand that my parents want to become grandparents and try themselves in a new role. But this is my family, right? I’m glad that my loved ones are worried and worried about me, but I decide for myself what to do next. Of course, I had a conversation about family with my mother - this is my mother! But there was no such thing as “stop being a girl!” Moreover, I am constantly busy, I don’t have time to “sit”.

-Where do you see yourself in ten years? Are you an athlete or a mother, do you live in Belarus or abroad?

Ten years is such a short time! During this time, nothing may change radically. Of course, I see myself as a family man, with children. Will I still be swimming in ten years? Keeping yourself in shape, taking part in local competitions - yes. And do your other favorite thing, which is swimming.

- What do you expect from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics?

I have the most optimistic expectations!

Two-time vice-champion of the 2012 Olympic Games (50 and 100 meters freestyle), winner of many world and European championships, Honored Master of Sports of the Republic of Belarus.
